Garda Hospitalised After Chase in Kanturk

A member of An Garda Siochana has been injured after he was struck in the head with a rock. The guard based in Mallow station, attempted to arrest the fleeing male when he was attacked. It happened after a vehicle failed to stop for Gardai in the Charleville area yesterday at 2:30pm.

The chase ensued for almost twenty minutes around Charleville and Kanturk before the vehicle was ditched and two males tried fleeing on foot. Numerous units were called to the incident of the suspected stolen vehicle. Garda spokesperson; Chief Superintendent Patrick Hogan, described the manner of driving by the suspects by saying, “…dangerous driving is an understatement in this case… the pursuit was called off by senior members on scene twice due to the risk to public safety.”

Upon ditching the vehicle the chase continued on foot with a member tackling one of the males to the ground but was subsequently struck with a rock that left him unconscious and with a head wound.

Both males were arrested and brought to Kanturk Garda station for further questioning.

Garda sources have confirmed with us that the member has since been released from hospital and is recovering well. Chief Superintendent told the press today, “We are all thankful that our colleague is making a speedy recovery after this horrific incident”. “The actions and the professionalism of all Garda members involved in yesterday’s ordeal brought the chase to an end and prevented a worse outcome for all of us.”
